Are you looking forward to the day of your dental implant surgery? Afterall, what could be more exciting than getting your smile back for good? While you are probably eager, many people also feel nervous about undergoing the placement procedure. But with proper knowledge and preparation, the entire process will be a breeze. Continue reading for some tips to help you prepare for your dental implant surgery.

Stay Informed

When you head in for your consultation, keep in mind that this is the best time for you to ask any questions you may have about the procedure. Don’t be afraid to ask them, even if you think they are small or insignificant. It is important that you are well-informed before you make decisions about dental procedures. It may also help you feel more relaxed because you will know what you can expect on the day of surgery. Your dentist is happy to answer any questions you have, even if you think they are silly.

Plan Ahead of Time

Having a plan can help you feel more laid back on the day of your procedure. This way, you will have less to worry about when the day of your surgery comes around. If you know that you will undergo IV sedation during the placement procedure, be sure that you have arranged for a trusted family member or friend to drive you home afterwards. If you have younger children, be sure that you have someone to help care for them while you are recovering. You don’t want to be overwhelmed and should be getting plenty of rest. Schedule a few days off work so you have plenty of time to bounce back.

Follow Your Pre-Op Instructions

Most importantly, you need to closely follow any pre-op instructions from your dentist. For instance, if you are having IV sedation, your dentist will ask you to fast before your scheduled surgery to avoid complications. You may be asked to take certain medications, like antibiotics or pain relievers, before the procedure. It is a good idea to have some post-surgical foods ready for after the surgery. This includes softer foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, pudding, and applesauce.

It is understandable to be nervous about your procedure, but you have nothing to worry about. By speaking with your dentist and preparing ahead of time, the whole process will be a breeze!
