If you wear dentures, you know how important it is for them to feel secure and comfortable. Denture adhesive can help your restoration stay in place while eating and speaking, but using too much or applying it incorrectly can lead to frustration. Learning how to use denture adhesive properly will help you get the most from your smile and prevent irritation or mess.

When to Use Denture Adhesive

Not everyone needs denture adhesive, but it can make a big difference for those who experience looseness or discomfort. You may benefit from using adhesive if your dentures slip when talking or chewing, if you experience minor irritation from movement, or if you need a confidence boost in social situations.

That said, adhesive shouldn’t be used to compensate for dentures that don’t fit properly. Ill-fitting dentures can cause sore spots, difficulty eating, and long-term damage to your gums or jawbone. If your dentures are loose even after using adhesive correctly, it’s best to visit your dentist for an adjustment or replacement.

How to Prepare Your Dentures

Before applying adhesive, make sure your dentures and mouth are both clean and dry. Start by brushing your dentures with a soft toothbrush and mild denture cleaner to remove food debris and old adhesive. Rinse them thoroughly and gently pat them dry with a towel—adhesive sticks best to a dry surface.

If your gums or mouth feel irritated, allow them to rest before applying your dentures again. Using adhesive on sore tissue can make discomfort worse.

How to Apply Denture Adhesive

The key to using denture adhesive is to start with a small amount. Too much can cause the adhesive to ooze out, while too little might not provide enough hold. The right amount depends on the type of adhesive you’re using—cream, powder, or strips.

For cream adhesives, apply small dots or thin lines along the denture’s fitting surface. Avoid spreading it too close to the edges. For powders, sprinkle an even layer over the denture, then shake off any excess. If you prefer strips, cut them to fit and apply them according to the package directions.

Once the adhesive is applied, press the denture firmly into place and hold it for a few seconds to create a secure seal. Wait a few minutes before eating or drinking to ensure the adhesive sets properly.

How to Remove Denture Adhesive

Removing adhesive is just as important as applying it correctly. At the end of the day, take out your dentures and rinse your mouth with warm water to loosen any remaining adhesive. Use a soft brush or a damp cloth to gently clean your gums, tongue, and the inside of your mouth.

For the dentures themselves, use a denture brush and mild cleanser to remove adhesive residue. Avoid using toothpaste—it’s too abrasive and can scratch the surface of your dentures. Allow your dentures to soak overnight in a cleaning solution to keep them fresh and bacteria-free.

Using denture adhesive properly can help you feel more confident and comfortable each day, but remember: it’s a supplement, not a solution. If your dentures no longer fit well, it may be time to see your dentist for a refit.
